33 Pieces of Wisdom. For You.
30 Aug

So tomorrow is my last day at work. Yes, again. For the record, I am not serially unemployable – all this moving around does have some kind of higher purpose.
So this week, I’ve been packing up my desk. And in doing so, I had to unpick my tree of wisdom. What? Yes. That’s a thing.
My tree of wisdom is essentially just a bunch of sayings or quotes written on those virtual post-it notes you get that I keep saved to my desktop. Many of them came from this blog. I can honestly say that I find the entire experience of work more manageable when I take the time to read them in the morning and to meditate on them at various stages throughout my day (before making that phone call/sending that email/going into that meeting). Thinking on these small yet significant truths really makes me remember that there’s way, way more to life than bulging inboxes, burgeoning to-do lists and difficult clients. In fact, I think it might just be the achievable-at-your-desk equivalent of sitting on top of a mountain, surrounded by clouds, rainbows and perfect silence.
And here! Here are the leaves from my tree of wisdom, pruned and bulleted and served up conveniently in that blog post that just fell into your Reader. Enjoy friends, and let me know in the comments what you do to get yourself through the working day. I also drink heaps of coffee…
- Nobody gets through life without losing someone they love, something they need, or something they thought was meant to be. But it is these losses that make us stronger and eventually move us toward future opportunities. Embrace these opportunities. Enter new relationships and new situations, knowing that you are venturing into unfamiliar territory. Be ready to learn, be ready for a challenge, and be ready to experience something or meet someone that just might change your life forever.
- Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, and small minds gossip about people.
- You can’t live a positive life with a negative attitude. Heaven on Earth is a choice we must make, not a place we must find. Let every day be a dream you can touch. Let every day be a love you can feel. Let every day be a reason to live. Life is too short to be anything but positive.
- The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.
- Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.
- Look at yourself and remember, people in far worse situations have done far more difficult things than this.
- No matter who you are, no matter what you did, no matter where you’ve come from, you can always change and become a better version of yourself.
- Inner peace begins the moment you choose not to allow another person or event to control your emotions.
- Be grateful for what you have right now, try not to dwell on the things you’ve lost, strive for what you want most, and keep marching forward.
- Our thoughts are the makers of our moods, the inventors of our dreams and the creators of our will. That is why we must sort through them carefully and choose to respond only to those that will help us build the life we want and the outlook we want to hold as we’re living it.
- Focus on those who love and accept you for who you are, and shower them with the love and kindness they deserve.
- Let each day be a scavenger hunt in which you must find at least one of these things: a sincere laugh, an act of kindness, a realization, or a lesson that will lead you closer to your dreams.
- Wake up each day thankful for your own life. Someone, somewhere, is fighting desperately for theirs.
- The next five years can be the best five years of your life, or just another five years. The decision is yours. The best part of your life will start on the day you decide your life is your own – no one to lean on, rely on, or blame. It takes courage and strength, but you need to say it: “The gift of life is mine, it is an amazing journey, and I alone am responsible for the quality of it”.
- It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them.
- There’s a difference between being agreeable and agreeing to everything. Give yourself permission to immediately walk away from anything that gives you bad vibes. There is no need to explain or make sense of it. Just trust the little inner voice when it’s telling you, “This is a bad idea.”
- The ‘right person’ might be a myth. Sorry about that. But there’ll be a whole crowd of nearly-right people. Invest in one of them and realise that the investment is where the magic is.
- You have a choice each and every single day. Choose to appreciate what you have. Choose to make time for yourself. Choose to do something that makes you smile. Choose to be excited. Choose to laugh at your own silliness. Choose to spend time with positive people. Choose to be persistent with your goals. Choose to try again and again. Within your choices lie all the tools and resources you need to design the life of your dreams, it’s just a matter of choosing wisely.
- When you start to really know someone, most of their physical characteristics vanish in your mind. You begin to dwell in their energy, recognize their scent, and appreciate their wit. You see only the essence of the person, not the shell. That’s why you can’t fall in love with physical beauty. You can lust after it, be infatuated by it, or want to own it. You can love it with your eyes and your body for a little while, but not your heart in the long-term. And that’s why, when you really connect with a person’s inner self, most physical imperfections become irrelevant.
- When you have to start compromising yourself and your morals for the people around you, it’s probably time to change the people around you.
- Being alone and happy doesn’t mean sequestering yourself from the world. It means being confident enough to know that you can surround yourself with people, but not depend on them for your own happiness.
- Character is higher than intellect. A great soul will be strong to live as well as think.
- Let the constant growth and improvement in your own life leave you with no time to criticise others.
- Happiness is not a result of getting something you don’t have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what you do have. You create happiness with your attitude, your behavior and your actions. It is all up to you.
- Most of the time, happiness doesn’t come from money, or fame, or power. It comes from good friends and the quiet nobility of leading a good life.
- Live in such a way that if someone decided to speak badly of you, no one would believe it.
- It is only by being unapologetically yourself that you will attract the people who don’t ask you to apologise.
- No matter how many mistakes you make or how slow your progress, you are still way ahead of everyone who isn’t trying.
- Our brightest future hinges on our ability to pay attention to what we’re doing right now, today.
- There are seven billion people in the world; don’t waste your time by letting one of them ruin your happiness. You are good enough, smart enough, beautiful enough, and strong enough. Somewhere someone is looking for exactly what you have to offer.
- Man never made any material as resilient as the human spirit.
- Things change, but the sun always rises the next day. The bad news: nothing is permanent. The good news: nothing is permanent
- To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best day and night to make you like everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight and never stop fighting.
